Strolling around the dazzling lights of the Taipei Lantern Festival last night, I felt proud of my culture. There were crowds of people smiling, carrying their lantern down Ren-Ai Rd. bathing in the spirit of the Lantern Festival. The lights were throughly enjoyable.
My family and my friend Little Ghost walked around in the melody of Chen-Shen's songs; the ranbow coloured light of the Lantern Festival and the smiles of the people around us. All was pleasant and I felt grateful that I was able to be out in the crowd to share this expereince with the rest of the Taipei residents.
The lights this yeare were around the theme of roosters. Many of the lanterns creatively used recycled materials such as Yakult bottles or fruit wrappers. I was entranced by it all. I am not usually a big fan of crowds but last night was definetly a night to be out with people. It was also really fun to see traditional Taiwanese stages with artist singing old songs. The stage was shaped like a temple and red in colour. The singer was dressed up as an ancient empress and she twirled her long sleeves to the rythm of her songs.
Festivals are a good time to remind people of their heritage and I was so proud of mine last night. I hope that other people can also enjoy their culture as much as I enjoyed mine last night.
