Prior to Encounter

Arrived on the playground
of a single leveled primary school
only knew yes, no, thank.
Looking out. White Skin, round eyes
people I know but had not seen
umbrella heads of vast shades bobbed
up and down around me
brown, ginger, blond
amazing colours I didn't believe as
natural.
Black hair was all I knew.

Jeans, jumpers, trainers
casual, free, uniformless.
I was thrilled to rid myself of
pleated skirts, ironed shirts, orange hat.
Liberated.

Voices of bubbled words filled my ears
blur r r r r
vanished bubbles
the words slurred and blended
like rainbows on bubbles
waltzing round and round
swerving from green to blue
to of bubble to bottom

Looking out. I was sure
I would blend
well into
multi-coloured-
ness.
